CMF case study

On The Go

CMF strategy, design and application for a sharing car with a healthy-food vending machine inside.

Roma S. RupaniSponsored by Lear Corporation2016

Built for Fastronomic foodies

On the Go is designed for Fastronomic foodies who skip meals at least 3 times a week and prefer to snack rather than sit down to a full meal.

This fast-moving life of millennials is creating an urge of having desired things “now”. How good will it be to have a vending machine in a car providing healthy food and hygienic options, right?

The project was sponsored by Lear Corporation. The collaboration gave the team the chance to have samples made by Eagle Ottawa and Guilford.

A day in Kim’s life

The system design follows one user, Kimberly Jones, 29, through a day with On The Go: a weekly or monthly subscription, an app to order, and the cabin that delivers.

Soft and Hard

Materials considered for the cabin, each with the pluses and minuses noted on the board.

Soft

Self cleaning textile

Anti-odour, static, dust

Technical textile with self cleaning like a lotus.

+ Light weight, UV resistance, weather resistance, odourless, acoustic.

− Fire resistance (unknown), scratch resistance (moderate), chemical resistance (moderate).

A beaker of dark liquid beside a bottle labelled SOAK, sweat sensitive textile coating. Six test tubes shading from yellow-green to teal along an acid to base scale.

SOAK

Sweat sensitive textile coating

When the SOAK coating is applied to clothing, it changes colour and communicates water level.

+ Absorbency, accepts finishes well, high wear resistance, sustainable.

− Moderate chemical resistance, limited colours.

Soft folds of a pale, silky textile. A cream knitted fibre stretched into a scalloped shape.

Bamboo Kun

Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial

This fibre prevents bacteria from cultivating on any surface.

+ Absorbency, accepts finishes well, high wear resistance, sustainable.

− Chemical resistance (moderate), colour limitations.

Hard

Green roof

Vegetation facades

A green roof cools the building down in summer and insulates it in winter.

+ Low energy consumption, water retention system, autonomous, eco friendly.

− Fire resistance, high maintenance.

A hand behind a panel of faceted glass blocks, light breaking through them. Oval cut-outs in thin wood veneer, glowing amber at the edges.

Light penetration

Light absorbed and scattered

Light penetration can be achieved through structure, texture, volume, colour, relief, prisms, openness, an illusion of depth and reflection.

+ Biological, eliminates winter blues, therapy, space enhancement.

− Privacy, pattern limitations, colour limitations.

A charcoal felt panel with a slot, resting on light oak. Dark felt stripes meeting a light oak frame.

Felt stripes

Natural material

Hand made, flexible and natural, composed of 100% wool felt and available in 53 different colours.

+ Matte, medium texture, hard resilient, good acoustics, fire resistance, renewable.

− Poor weather resistance, medium in weight.

Material Development

The patterns were developed into physical samples at Eagle Ottawa and Guilford: leather dyed and perforated, and textiles etched.
